Biofloc fish farming — tanks, not ponds

Biofloc grows fish in aerated tanks with almost no water change by turning fish waste into microbial food the fish eat again. It is a real, viable technology — but it is also the vehicle for one of India's most common farming scams. This course teaches both.

Before anything else — the honest truth

Peer-reviewed Indian trials show a good operator earns a benefit:cost ratio around 1.9–2.0 — genuinely viable, but not "double your money every 6 months." Marketing videos claim "600 kg per tank"; real beginners often harvest under 100 kg. And the biggest risk to a beginner is not fish disease — it's the "guaranteed buyback / franchise" scam (see Chapter 8). Read that chapter before you pay anyone a rupee.

The science — turning waste into food

Fish excrete toxic ammonia. Instead of flushing it out, you feed a bloom of bacteria a carbon source; they eat the ammonia and clump into "flocs" that the fish then eat.

The key dial: C:N ratio

Normal fish feed sits around C:N 9–10:1. To push the bacteria to eat ammonia, you raise the system to C:N ~15–20:1 by dosing a carbon source (molasses, jaggery, wheat flour). Rule of thumb: ~10–15 ml molasses per 1000 L per day. Keep C:N above ~10 or the wrong bacteria take over.

  • Heterotrophic (floc) ammonia control stabilises in 7–10 days; classic nitrification takes 30–40 days.
  • Biofloc improves feed conversion (FCR ~1.0–1.2 vs ~1.8 traditional) and cuts feed cost 20–30%.
  • Bacteria consume alkalinity — top up with lime / sodium bicarbonate to hold pH.

Building the system

Round tanks + non-stop aeration + backup power. Get these three right and you've solved most of the risk.

Round tanks

HDPE/PVC tarpaulin (₹7–13k for 10,000 L) or cement (permanent). Round = even circulation, sludge collects centrally. Depth 1.2–1.5 m. Start with 1–2 tanks.

Aeration (the heart)

Ring/air blower + air stones, 5–8 W per m³, 24/7. It keeps DO high AND the floc suspended. When floc matures, oxygen demand rises ~6×.

Backup power (mandatory)

Inverter for instant gaps + diesel generator for long cuts. A tank can crash in <30 minutes if the blower stops.

pH, DO, ammonia, nitrite kits + an Imhoff cone for floc volume.

Buy direct, not via "franchise"

Tanks and blowers are cheap on IndiaMART/TradeIndia. A single-tank setup runs ₹25–35k; a 5-tank unit ₹1.5–2.5 lakh. Franchise "turnkey" quotes are routinely inflated — their business is selling you the kit.

Water parameters — test, don't guess

Tank water changes far faster than a pond. A missed check can mean fast losses. Test DO, pH, temperature daily; ammonia, nitrite, floc volume every few days.

The Imhoff cone test

Fill the cone with tank water, let it settle 15–20 minutes, and read the settled floc in ml/L. Aim for 10–20 ml/L. It's the single most useful biofloc measurement.

Best fish for India

Not every fish suits biofloc, and some are illegal — this trips up beginners.

Never buy African/Thai magur

Clarias gariepinus ("hybrid magur") has been banned in India since 1997 — it's invasive and accumulates heavy metals. Farming, sale and transport are all illegal. If a seller offers cheap "hybrid magur," walk away.

The culture cycle

The order matters — you grow the floc first, then stock fish.

Prep & fill

Clean/disinfect the tank. Fill and aerate 24–48 h so chlorine dissipates. Don't add salt during early floc development (it stalls the floc).

Develop the floc (2–4 weeks)

Aeration on. Dose carbon (molasses 10–15 ppm/day) + a probiotic starter. The water turns brownish-green as the floc grows. Hold C:N 15–20:1.

Check floc, then stock

When the Imhoff cone reads ~15–20 ml/L, stock fingerlings — 100–200/m³ (lower = better growth & survival for beginners). Acclimatise slowly.

Feed & monitor

Start 28–32% protein feed at 3–5% body weight, 3–4×/day; reduce protein as the floc matures (it feeds the fish too). Test water daily; watch fish behaviour.

Harvest

Tilapia ~6 months (2 crops/yr), ~450–500 g. Drain, clean, and start fresh — water isn't reused between cycles.

The golden rule

The aerator must never stop — not even for a few minutes. India's power cuts make backup power the difference between a harvest and a tank full of dead fish.

Economics — and the scam to avoid

Biofloc can be profitable for a skilled operator. But the "guaranteed buyback / franchise" scam has cost many Indian farmers their savings. Read this before you invest.

A Kerala study (GIFT tilapia, 25,000 L tanks) got 578 kg/tank vs 260 kg in a plain control, netting ₹92,500–₹1,06,500 per 5-tank unit. Real — but that's ~2×, not "double every 6 months," and only with 24/7 power, daily testing, and your own buyer.

How the scam works — and the red flags

The operator's real profit is selling you overpriced tanks, aerators, fingerlings, feed and "training." The "guaranteed buyback" version collects your setup money upfront, then never sends a truck / refuses the price / vanishes. Documented Indian victims lost ₹1–1.5 lakh each (Kerala, during COVID); an Agra investment scam took ₹2.45 crore from 100+ farmers.

The legitimate path

Take the PMMSY subsidy (40% general / 60% SC-ST-Women) through your State Fisheries Department — e.g. ₹3 lakh on a ₹7.5-lakh 7-tank unit. Train at ICAR-CIFA / CIFE / your state fisheries dept, buy kit direct, start with 1–2 tanks, and line up your own buyer. As ICAR-CIBA's director warns: "even a narrow deviation from the scientific principles will do harm to the entire venture."

Do's & Don'ts of biofloc

  • Run aeration 24/7; install inverter + generator before stocking.
  • Keep a standby blower + emergency oxygen on site.
  • Test water daily (DO, pH, temp, ammonia, nitrite) + Imhoff cone.
  • Mature the floc 2–4 weeks before stocking.
  • Hold C:N 15–20:1; floc 10–20 ml/L; alkalinity 100–150.
  • Start with 1–2 tanks and ONE species (tilapia GIFT).
  • Buy tanks & blowers direct; take the PMMSY state subsidy.
  • Get real training (ICAR-CIFA/CIFE/state dept).
  • Line up your own buyer before harvest.
  • Remove sludge every 7–15 days.

DON'T

  • Don't trust "guaranteed buyback / double money" — it's the scam signature.
  • Don't pay upfront for a franchise/dealership/MLM scheme.
  • Don't believe "600 kg per tank" — beginners often get <100 kg.
  • Don't overstock beyond ~100–150/m³.
  • Don't let aeration stop even for minutes.
  • Don't buy African/Thai magur (banned since 1997).
  • Don't add salt during early floc development.
  • Don't reuse water between cycles; don't overfeed.
  • Don't skip water testing or eyeball it.
  • Don't sink lakhs into 10 tanks before running 1–2 successfully.
