Crop management — from sowing to harvest

Good crop management is not one magic input — it is a chain of small right decisions: test the soil, match the crop to the season, sow clean seed at the right depth, feed by soil test, water at critical stages, scout before spraying, and harvest at the right moisture. Miss a link and yield quietly drops 10–20%. Get the chain right and you beat the "recommended dose" every season.

🧪

Soil-test first

Free Soil Health Card sets the dose. Following it cut fertiliser use 8–10% (NPC).

🌱

Clean seed

Certified, tagged seed with good germination is the cheapest yield lever there is.

💧

Right timing

Water at critical stages, weed the first 20–40 days, scout weekly — not by habit.

📉

Cut losses

India loses ~₹92,651 cr/yr post-harvest — drying, grading and storage save real money.

The honest truth up front

No spray, "growth booster," "PPM/hormone" or "magic seed" doubles yield. Balanced soil-test-based nutrition, clean seed and correct timing do the real work. Anyone promising "guaranteed double income" or asking for an upfront fee to "get your subsidy faster" is running a scam — see the Do's & Don'ts chapter.

Planning the crop

Match the crop to four things: season, soil type, water availability, and nearby mandi demand. A crop that yields well but has no buyer nearby loses money.

KHARIF RABI ZAID Jun–Oct · monsoon rice, maize, soybean, cotton Oct–Mar · winter wheat, chana, mustard Mar–Jun moong, veg Rotate a legume (moong, urad, chana, soybean) into the cycle — it fixes N and cuts next season's fertiliser bill.
Figure 2 — India's three cropping seasons; slot a pulse in to fix nitrogen for free.
1

Test your soil

Free via Soil Health Card / KVK / CSC before each main season. It reports 12 parameters (N, P, K, S, Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, B, pH, EC, organic carbon) and a fertiliser recommendation.

2

Match crop to conditions

Pick the crop your season, soil and water suit — and that a nearby buyer actually wants. Chasing a "hot" crop with no local market is how farmers get stuck.

3

Plan a rotation

Follow a cereal (wheat/rice) with a legume. Pulses fix atmospheric nitrogen, break pest cycles, and lower your fertiliser cost the next season.

Sowing windows matter

Wheat: early (agheti) 20 Oct–10 Nov, late (pachheti) 10–25 Nov; harvest Feb–May by zone. Late sowing quietly costs yield — plan seed, fertiliser and labour so you never miss the window.

Seed & sowing

Certified seed with high germination and purity is the single cheapest yield lever. Check germination %, purity % and expiry on the tag before you buy — and keep the bill.

Animated Figure 3 — Line sowing with a seed drill beats broadcasting for even germination.

Seed treatment — order matters

Fungicide and biocontrol agents are incompatible — never mix them. If disease pressure needs a fungicide, use Carbendazim or Thiram at 2 g/kg seed (~24 h before sowing). Otherwise sequence biocontrol (Trichoderma) first → then biofertiliser (Rhizobium/Azotobacter/PSB), and dry in shade before sowing. Trichoderma seed treatment gave ~31% higher rice yield vs untreated in trials (4.9 vs 4.5 t/ha).

Nutrition — Integrated Nutrient Management

INM means feeding by soil test, not blanket bag: soil-test-based NPK, plus FYM/compost, plus biofertilisers. The STCR (Soil Test Crop Response) approach beats the generic "recommended dose" almost every time.

🧾

Set dose by soil test

NPK from soil-test value + target yield, not the bag everyone else buys.

💩

Add organics

FYM / compost feed the soil and supply micronutrients chemicals miss.

🦠

Biofertilisers

Rhizobium / Azotobacter / PSB cut chemical N & P need.

⏱️

Split the nitrogen

Full P & K at sowing; N in splits (½ basal + rest at first/second irrigation for wheat).

Know the demand

Crops have measurable needs — field pea, for example, takes 5.56 kg N, 0.79 kg P₂O₅, 3.08 kg K₂O per quintal of grain. Following your free Soil Health Card cut chemical fertiliser use 8–10% (National Productivity Council) with no yield loss — cash saved and healthier soil.

Blanket fertiliser wastes money

Applying the same NPK bag as your neighbour, with no soil test, commonly over-applies nitrogen and under-applies micronutrients — it costs cash, lodges the crop, and pulls in pests. Skip the soil test and you pay twice.

Water & weed management

Water at critical stages, not by habit, and keep the field weed-free early. Weeds compete hardest in the first 20–40 days — that is where yield is silently lost.

CRI · 20–25 DAS MOST critical Tillering2nd Flowering3rd Grain-fill4th If water is scarce, prioritise the 1st (CRI) and 3rd (flowering) irrigations.
Animated Figure 5 — Wheat's critical irrigations; never skip CRI at 20–25 days after sowing.
  • CRI (crown root initiation), 20–25 days after sowing, is the single most critical wheat irrigation — never skip it.
  • Other critical stages: tillering, flowering, grain-filling. If water is short, prioritise the 1st and 3rd.
  • Weed early: keep the crop weed-free in the first 20–40 days. Use mechanical/manual weeding first; herbicides only at the correct dose and timing.
  • Don't flood needlessly — drip/sprinkler under PMKSY "Per Drop More Crop" improves water-use efficiency and carries subsidy.

Pest & disease basics

Scout weekly. Act on the economic threshold — not on the first insect you see. Overspraying is the most common failure: it raises cost, kills natural predators, and breeds resistance.

IPM order — cheapest & safest first 🌾 Resistant variety 🧹 Clean seed + field sanitation 🌿 Biocontrol / neem ⚗️ Chemical — only if threshold crossed Use chemical last, at the label dose, only when scouting shows the threshold is crossed.
Figure 6 — The IPM ladder: resistant variety and sanitation first, chemical last.
  • Scout weekly and identify the pest/disease before deciding to spray.
  • Act only when the economic threshold is crossed — a few insects is not an outbreak.
  • Use neem / biocontrol first; reach for chemical only at the correct label dose as a last step.
  • Overspraying breeds resistance and kills the beneficial insects that were controlling the pest for free.

Harvest & post-harvest

Post-harvest is where money silently leaks. India loses an estimated ₹92,651 crore a year to post-harvest losses — most of it at storage, grading, transport and retail.

Cut the leak

Harvest at the right moisture, dry to a safe level (<12%), then grade and clean-bag before storage. For perishables, line up cold chain and buyers before the crop matures — that is what protects your price.

Weather risk is real

Even perfect management can fail to unseasonal rain, heat or hail. This is exactly why PMFBY crop insurance exists — report any loss within 72 hours.

Records & economics

Keep a simple diary: every input cost, every operation date, the yield, and the sale price. Then compute your Benefit–Cost ratio (B:C). You cannot improve what you do not measure.

🧾

Log costs

Seed, fertiliser, labour, irrigation, pesticide — write every rupee down.

📆

Log dates

Sowing, irrigation, spray, harvest — so next season you can repeat what worked.

⚖️

Compute B:C

Matching supply to demand (STCR nutrition) improves the benefit–cost ratio.

Do's & Don'ts of crop management

Scam & fraud patterns to avoid

Fake/spurious seed & fertiliser (loose, no tag, no batch/MRP) — always demand a bill and keep the tag; it's your proof for a complaint or PMFBY claim. "Guaranteed double income" agents / WhatsApp gurus selling costly "organic tonics" or "nano boosters" or contract-farming with upfront fees — treat any upfront-payment scheme as suspect. Loan/subsidy touts charging a fee to "speed up" a free scheme, and fake advisory apps/calls asking for OTP or bank details — no genuine government scheme ever needs your OTP.

DO

  • Get a free Soil Health Card / soil test before every main season.
  • Buy only certified seed with tag, bill and valid germination/purity/expiry.
  • Treat seed correctly — Trichoderma before biofertiliser; fungicide 2 g/kg if needed.
  • Sow at recommended spacing, depth & seed rate (line sowing over broadcasting).
  • Apply full P & K at sowing and split nitrogen across critical stages.
  • Add FYM/compost + biofertilisers (INM), not chemical fertiliser alone.
  • Irrigate at critical stages — for wheat, never skip CRI at 20–25 DAS.
  • Keep the field weed-free in the first 20–40 days.
  • Scout weekly and act on economic threshold, using neem/biocontrol first.
  • Harvest at correct grain moisture and dry to safe storage level (<12%).
  • Grade, clean-bag and store properly to cut post-harvest loss.
  • Keep written cost-and-sale records and check MSP/mandi price before selling.

DON'T

  • Don't use unbranded/untagged seed or fertiliser — spurious inputs are common.
  • Don't skip the soil test and apply the blanket NPK everyone else uses.
  • Don't mix fungicide with biocontrol/biofertiliser — they're incompatible.
  • Don't overdose nitrogen — it lodges the crop and pulls in pests.
  • Don't broadcast seed unevenly or sow too deep/shallow.
  • Don't irrigate by habit or flood needlessly — water at critical stages.
  • Don't spray pesticide on first sight of an insect or above label dose.
  • Don't ignore weeds in the early crop — that's where yield is lost.
  • Don't harvest too wet (>20% for combine) or store above 12% moisture.
  • Don't believe "miracle tonic / double-income / guaranteed" pitches or pay upfront to scheme touts.
  • Don't share OTP/bank details on calls or apps claiming subsidy help.
  • Don't sell without checking MSP and the current mandi rate.
