Indoor Cordyceps (Keeda Jadi) Farming
Cultivate the medicinal caterpillar fungus (Cordyceps militaris) in a clean indoor lab.
First, the truth: two very different "Cordyceps"
Before spending a rupee, understand this. The famous wild "keeda jadi" is not the fungus grown in indoor farms. Confusing them is the most common — and costliest — mistake.
The good news
Both are valued for cordycepin and adenosine — but cultivated C. militaris actually contains far more cordycepin than the wild caterpillar fungus (studies report roughly 5–90× more; one found cordycepin 29× and adenosine 8× higher). So militaris is a genuinely valuable, sustainable crop — you just must sell it honestly as what it is.
Why farmers are excited — and where to be careful
Cultivated C. militaris sells for a very high price in a tiny space. That is the attraction. But it needs laboratory-grade cleanliness, not a normal shed — and the economics are more honest than the hype.

A single clean room (100–200 sq ft) can be a real business.

The number the hype hides
Peer-reviewed ICAR economics found that the smallest units run below break-even (margin-of-safety about −64%). Profit usually needs scaling to a medium unit. And most celebrated "cordyceps success stories" earn a large share from selling training/kits/culture to the next farmer — not purely from growing. Grow it because you can grow it well, and have a buyer.
The honest catch
- Success = sterility. One speck of the wrong mold ruins a jar.
- Strains degenerate — you need good, fresh culture.
- The biggest financial risk to a beginner is not mold — it's the buyback/franchise scam.
The whole journey — one picture
From culture to dried product takes about 60–90 days. Watch the dot travel the eight stages. Stages 1–4 are "lab work" (sterile); stages 5–8 are "grow room" (climate).

You are running a mini mushroom laboratory. Most items are affordable; the discipline of using them cleanly is what matters. Note: this species grows in jars/bottles, not poly bags.
Pressure cooker/autoclave
Reaches 121°C to kill every competing microbe in the substrate.
Still-air box / laminar hood
SAB is fine for jar+port inoculation; a laminar hood is needed for open agar/LC transfers.

The golden law: clean or fail
Cordyceps grows slowly at first, so faster molds and bacteria win any race if they get in. In one mushroom-house study, Trichoderma alone was ~20% of all airborne fungi. Contamination is the #1 technical reason batches fail.
Where contamination sneaks in
- Grain not soaked before sterilising — heat-resistant bacterial endospores survive (soak 12–24 h to activate them so the autoclave kills them).
- Under-sterilised substrate (cooker not hot/long enough).
- Opening jars in moving air (spores float in).
- Tools not flame-sterilised between transfers.
- Dirty hands, breath, clothing — and mites (which carry Trichoderma around).
- A contaminated or weak culture to begin with.
Habits that keep you clean
- Work in a still-air box; move slowly; don't talk over open jars.
- Wipe hands, gloves, box and jar ports with 70% alcohol.
- Flame-sterilise the needle before each jar.
- Only fully-cooled, properly-sterilised jars get inoculated.
- Recurring contamination = a room problem — deep-clean, don't just wash hands.
The culture ladder — your living seed stock
C. militaris is unusual: you inoculate the final fruiting jar directly — there's no bulk-substrate/casing step like other mushrooms. You scale by running more jars + more liquid culture, not bigger blocks.

Strain degeneration — the silent yield killer
This is the #1 commercial problem after contamination. Repeatedly transferring a strain makes it lose its ability to fruit — it just grows fuzzy mycelium with no orange clubs.
Garbage in, garbage out
A weak or contaminated culture will fail no matter how perfect your room is. Buy proven, orange-pigmented, high-cordycepin lines; keep passages low; and store a backup (cryo or 4°C slants in 20% glycerol). Note: −80°C is unsuitable for this species — use liquid nitrogen or sterile-water storage.
The substrate — food for the fungus
C. militaris loves cooked brown rice enriched with a light nutrient broth. Keep the bed shallow — you fruit on the surface, so the rice should sit under the liquid, not deep.
Soak first!
Soak the rice/grain 12–24 hours before sterilising. This activates dormant bacterial endospores so the pressure cooker can actually kill them — a top cause of "sour/wet" bacterial failures is skipping this.
Recipes with real quantities
Growers vary, but these converge well. Start with Recipe A; try pupae (Recipe C) only once you're consistent.

A simple broth: 3 whole eggs (incl. shells) + 1 Tbsp malt + 1 Tbsp yeast extract, blended and topped to 500 ml. Bin scale: 855 g rice + 1 L broth + 120–300 ml LC.
C · Silkworm-pupae medium (higher cordycepin, advanced)
50 g brown rice + 10 g silkworm pupae in 70 ml water in a bottle; sterilise; culture ~60 days. This mimics the insect host and can raise active-compound content. (Injecting live pupae is a separate, expert technique.)
Boosters worth knowing
Research shows Fe²⁺ (1 g/L FeSO₄) can raise cordycepin ~70%; a pinch of MSG on wheat/rice, and amino acids (alanine, glycine, aspartic acid) also help. Keep it simple first; optimise later.
Sterilise — kill everything else first
This step decides whether your batch lives or dies. Jars must reach 121°C at 15 psi and hold it long enough to kill tough spores.

Cool completely
Leave jars in the closed cooker until pressure returns to zero, then cool overnight to room temperature. Hot jars kill the culture; warm jars sweat and pull in contaminated air as they cool.
Inoculation — the critical clean moment
You inject a little liquid culture into each cooled, sterile jar through the port. Because the syringe-through-port method never opens the jar to air, a still-air box is enough.
Prep the box
Wipe the still-air box, gloves, jar ports and syringe with 70% alcohol. Let it dry.
Shake & load
Gently swirl the LC to spread mycelium; draw it up. Flame the needle, let it cool a second.
Inject each jar
Push the needle through the port, inject 1–2 ml (5 ml for pint, 10–20 cc for quart), withdraw. Re-flame between jars. Never open the lid.
Colonisation — let the white take over
Now the mycelium eats through the rice. Keep jars in the dark at ~20°C (19–22°C) until fully creamy-white — usually 12–21 days. Jars stay sealed; this species tolerates high CO₂ (up to ~5000 ppm) and needs no air exchange yet.
Don't over-colonise
Once white, move on — leaving jars too long ("overlay") can block fruiting. Any green, black, pink or slimy patch = contamination; isolate and discard that jar.
Fruiting — where the magic (and money) is
Now you switch on light (blue matters!) and raise humidity with fresh air. Orange "clubs" form over 30–40 days.
Give BLUE light
Move to 500–1000 lux, 12–14 h/day. Blue (440–450 nm) is mandatory for primordia — in dark or red-only light, fruiting is completely inhibited and you stay white.
Raise humidity + fresh air
Hold 80–95% RH and give daily fresh-air exchange to keep CO₂ under ~1200 ppm. Stagnant, dry air = poor, stunted clubs.
Keep it cool
Hold 18–20°C. Above ~20°C it "fuzzes over" (reverts to white mycelium, no clubs); below 15°C it barely grows.
Let them elongate
Tiny orange bumps (primordia) appear first, then grow into finger-like clubs over ~30–40 days.
Pushing quality: cordycepin optimisation
Buyers pay for cordycepin %. Once you can reliably grow clubs, you can tune conditions to raise it — but there's a trade-off with total weight.

Typical content
Good cultivated fruiting bodies run about 2.5–10 mg/g cordycepin (premium extracts higher). Optima are strain-dependent and studies sometimes disagree — treat these as starting points and test your own batches.
Harvest & dry
Harvest when clubs are full-sized (3–10 cm), deep orange and the surface turns "shaggy" (perithecia forming) — but before spores release (sporulation degrades quality). Then dry gently to protect cordycepin.
Plan in dried weight
Buyers deal in dried weight. A pint jar might give ~2–5 g dried. Use or dry clubs within 1–2 days of harvest; store the dried product airtight, cool and dark.

Learn to read your jars. Catching a bad one early stops it infecting the whole shelf.

Safe disposal
Bag and remove immediately in sealed plastic — never disturb a sporulating mould indoors. Sanitise the shelf and tools before the next run. There is no reliable fungicide that kills Trichoderma without harming the crop — prevention is the only control.

- Switch to blue-containing light 12–14 h to trigger fruiting.

DON'T
- Don't call cultivated militaris "wild keeda-jadi / sinensis" to buyers.
- Don't skip soaking the grain.
- Don't inoculate hot or warm jars.
- Don't open jars in a draft or moving air.
- Don't reuse a tired, over-passaged strain.
- Don't let the room exceed ~20°C during fruiting (it fuzzes over).
- Don't fruit in darkness or red-only light — you'll get no clubs.
- Don't let humidity crash or air go stagnant.
- Don't ignore green/black/slimy jars — bag them immediately.
- Don't dry at high heat — it destroys cordycepin.
- Don't scale up before you can grow clean jars reliably.
- Don't pay big money to "guaranteed buyback" franchise schemes.
The money side — honest numbers
There is no official price regulator; price is buyer-negotiated on cordycepin potency. Use these anchors, not IndiaMART headline listings.

The widely-cited real example — read the fine print
A Delhi grower ran a 200 sq ft unit, ~₹4 lakh setup, sold ~₹93,000/kg, ~₹30 lakh revenue on ~₹5 lakh costs. But a large share came from training fees (₹15,000 × 20–30 trainees/month) + selling culture/kits, not just the crop. This is the pattern for nearly every success story.
Cost drivers: 24/7 electricity (cooling/humidity/light), quality culture (~₹15,000/strain), jars, brown rice + nutrients, sterilisation, and lab testing (~₹8,000/sample). Buyers: nutraceutical & Ayurvedic makers, D2C brands, export (APEDA needed) — and finding them is the hardest part.
Selling legally & honestly in India
A clean, honest label backed by a lab report is your biggest selling advantage in a market full of adulteration.
FSSAI + AYUSH
Sold as food/nutraceutical (FSSAI); as a herb it also sits under AYUSH. Novel claims route through FSSAI's Non-Specified Food approval.
Lab CoA
Assay cordycepin + adenosine by HPLC plus heavy metals at a NABL/ISO-17025 lab (~₹8,000/sample). Serious buyers demand a batch CoA naming the producer.
Label truthfully
"Cordyceps militaris (fruiting body)" — state species and part. Selling militaris as "sinensis / Himalayan cordyceps" is misbranding.
Authenticate
DNA barcoding (ITS) + HPLC. The industry is full of fakes — some "cordyceps" powders were rice flour, nutmeg, or heavily grain-filled.
The "cheap cordyceps" trap
Unusually cheap dried bodies are often the cordycepin-leached residue left after pharma extraction — looks identical, nutritionally hollow. If nobody can produce quality below ~₹45,000/kg, a sub-₹30,000 "premium" offer is suspect.
Protect yourself — the biggest beginner risk
The high price attracts fraud. Many farmers have lost money to "invest and we'll buy everything back" traps. Treat any "guaranteed buyback" as guilty until proven otherwise.
How the scam works (the inversion)
The operator's real profit is selling you the kit, culture and a ₹3-lakh "training/franchise" package — then rejecting your harvest under grading clauses to escape the buyback. A beginner's contamination-prone crop conveniently "fails grading."
Red flags — memorise these
- The pitch is about returns ("earn double"), not the crop.
- "No skill/knowledge needed" + guaranteed buyback — impossible for a sterile-lab crop.
- Income from recruiting others (illegal money-circulation).
- Big upfront deposit / mandatory kit or culture purchase.
- Returns above what 12–14 g/jar × 4–6 cycles can physically produce.
- No CoA, vague sourcing, grading loopholes; no farm visit allowed.
Safe practice & where to report
Visit a real running lab; learn from ICAR/DMR-Solan; start with a handful of jars; get any buyback promise in writing with prices/conditions; verify the company on MCA and SEBI barred-entity lists. Report fraud to local Police / EOW, SEBI, MCA. (Documented pattern: Agra 2025 — 100+ farmers, ₹2.45 crore lost to a "double your money" bond scam.)
