Spirulina — the protein-rich "superfood" algae
Spirulina (Arthrospira) is a spiral blue-green micro-alga, grown in shallow sunlit tanks. Dried, it is ~60–70% protein and rich in iron, beta-carotene and B12 — sold as powder, tablets, food ingredient, feed and cosmetics.

One of the most protein-dense foods; no cellulose wall so it's highly digestible.
Loves Indian sun
Grows fastest at 30–35°C — a natural fit for warm, sunny regions.
Fast doubling
Biomass can double in 3–5 days; semi-continuous daily/weekly harvest.
High-value markets
Nutraceuticals, food, aqua/poultry feed, cosmetics, export.
Honest note
Slogans like "1 kg spirulina = 1000 kg vegetables" and "₹1 lakh+/month from 1 acre on ₹2 lakh" are marketing, not fact. Realistic income from a small unit is ~₹40,000–45,000/month — and only with clean culture, low-temp drying, FSSAI certification and a real buyer. Selling is the bottleneck, not growing.
The growing tank
Spirulina grows in shallow, stirred, lined tanks — sunlight only reaches the top few centimetres, so depth and stirring are everything.
Shallow & lined
Depth 20–30 cm (25 cm ideal). Plastic-lined (cheap, short life) or concrete (durable). Small ponds ~10×20 ft; a unit is often ~20 ponds.
Stir
Paddle wheel (or a solar pump), or manually with a stick every 2–3 hours in daylight — one direction, gently.
Cover (optional)
Transparent polythene raises temperature, cuts evaporation and blocks insects/dust.
Seed pond
Keep one small pond purely for mother/seed culture to restart others.
Indicative setup: a low-cost earth-pit + durable liner ~₹3–4.5 lakh; the NABARD model bankable project for 20 ponds is ₹12.87 lakh. Treat automated "₹55 lakh–₹2 crore/acre" turnkey quotes (from equipment sellers) with scepticism.
The growth medium — high pH is your defence
Spirulina thrives in an alkaline, high-pH medium where almost nothing else grows. That's how you keep the culture pure without chemicals.
The main input: sodium bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is the carbon source + pH buffer, and your biggest recurring cost. Classic Zarrouk's medium uses 16.8 g/L; NABARD's simplified India recipe uses 8 g/L. Target pH ~9–10.5 (Chlorella can't survive there) but stay below ~11.

Water & balance
Use clean water; keep the K⁺:Na⁺ ratio below 5. Top up fresh water ~3×/month in summer to hold the level against evaporation (which concentrates salts).
From seed to dried powder
The culture turns from pale to deep green as it matures, then you filter, wash and gently dry it.
Inoculate
Add live mother culture (or ~30 g dry spirulina per 10 L) to the fresh alkaline medium.
Grow in sunlight
Optimal 30–35°C (bleaches above ~35, dies below 20); bright light. Stir every 2–3 h. Biomass doubles in 3–5 days.
Monitor
Watch pH and colour (dark green = ready); density with a Secchi disk (~0.5 g/L). First harvest in ~5–18 days.
Harvest by filtering
Pour culture through a fine cloth (30–50 micron); medium drains back to the pond, green paste stays. Don't over-harvest — leave enough to regrow.
Wash & dry
Rinse 2–3× (removes salt, neutralises pH), then dry at low temperature (shade or <60–70°C) — high heat/sun destroys nutrients & pigments. Powder and pack airtight. Yield ~9–15 g/m²/day; 1 kg wet → ~100 g dry.
Contamination — the make-or-break risk
Open ponds can crash. Your defences are high pH, good buffering, covering and constant monitoring.

Keep a microscope habit
Check the culture under a microscope often — spiral filaments = good; green balls (Chlorella) or wriggling protozoa = act fast. Never over-harvest; always leave culture to regenerate.
The money side — honest numbers
Uncertified bulk powder sells for as little as ₹100–600/kg; certified, food-grade, spray-dried powder reaches ₹900–1,700/kg (premium branded higher). Nutrient cost is roughly ₹120–150 per kg of powder produced. Buyers: nutraceutical & food makers, feed, cosmetics, Ayurveda, and export.
The honest reality
- Growing is the easy part; selling is the bottleneck. Many farms grow well, then can't find buyers.
- Premium prices require certification (FSSAI, GMP, COA) + controlled drying — a small unbranded pond gets commodity prices.
- "Guaranteed buyback" from starter-kit sellers is frequently unreliable — get commitments in writing and verify the seller's track record.
- Chinese imports pressure commodity prices — differentiate via organic/specialty.
Support
NABARD back-ended subsidy via banks (needs a DPR), NHM/RKVY unit subsidies, and MSME support for processing (dryers, packing). Percentages vary by state/year — verify at nabard.org and your State Horticulture Department before relying on them.
Food safety & FSSAI
Spirulina is a food/nutraceutical — quality & testing are non-negotiable, because algae bioaccumulate heavy metals from water and nutrients.
FSSAI licence
Manufacture under FSSAI Nutraceutical rules (via the FoSCoS portal); GMP/HACCP/ISO 22000 for units. No disease-cure claims allowed.
Mandatory testing
Heavy metals (arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury), microbial pathogens, microcystin screening, and nutrition vs label — at an NABL/FSSAI-accredited lab, with a COA per batch.
Composition standard
FSSAI spirulina powder: protein min 55%, carbs max 30%, fat ≤10%, moisture 3–6%.
Clean inputs
Clean water & food-grade nutrients — dirty water = failed heavy-metal tests and unsellable product.
Do's & Don'ts of spirulina
DO
- Keep the medium alkaline (pH ~9–10.5) — your main anti-contamination weapon.
- Hold water depth 20–30 cm for light penetration.
- Stir every 2–3 h in daylight.
- Cover ponds to raise temp, cut evaporation & block insects.
- Monitor pH, colour and density daily; microscope-check often.
- Harvest through 30–50 µm cloth; wash 2–3× to neutralise.
- Dry at low temperature / shade to protect nutrients.
- Keep one pond purely for seed culture.
- Get FSSAI licence + heavy-metal + microbial testing before selling as food.
- Line up real buyers and know their spec before scaling.
DON'T
- Don't let temperature exceed 35°C (bleaching) or fall below 20°C.
- Don't change pH abruptly — poorly-buffered culture crashes.
- Don't over-harvest — always leave culture to regenerate.
- Don't sun-dry carelessly — it degrades nutrients + risks contamination.
- Don't ignore green algae / larvae — skim and microscope-check.
- Don't trust "guaranteed buyback" from kit-sellers without written proof.
- Don't believe ₹1 lakh+/month hype — budget ~₹40–45k realistic on a small unit.
- Don't expect premium prices without certification.
- Don't use dirty/contaminated water (heavy-metal risk).
- Don't make deep ponds (>30 cm) — it kills light penetration.
