Hydroponics — growing without soil

In hydroponics, roots sit in (or are fed) a nutrient solution — water plus dissolved mineral salts — and you control everything the soil normally does: water, nutrients, oxygen, pH. Done right it grows premium greens beautifully. But be clear-eyed: it's high-capital, electricity-dependent, skill-heavy, and market-dependent. It's a serious horticulture business, not a cheap farming shortcut — and it cannot grow staple grains profitably.

The one-line truth

Growing lettuce is the easy part; selling it consistently at premium prices is the hard part. The farmers who win grow exotic greens near a metro, control EC/pH/temperature obsessively, keep backup power, and had buyers (hotels, upscale retail, export) lined up before they built. Payback is realistically 3–5+ years — treat "guaranteed huge profit" pitches as marketing.

Rule of thumb

Leaf → NFT/DWC. Fruit → Dutch/Bato bucket + drip. Hobby → Kratky. (Related: aeroponics mists bare roots — fastest but most fragile; aquaponics adds fish — organic-friendly but you now run two biological systems.)

Growing media

Media are inert — they hold the roots and add no nutrients.

India's workhorse for germination & media beds. Must be buffered/rinsed to remove salts and set pH.

Perlite

Volcanic glass — excellent aeration/drainage; usually blended, not used alone.

Clay pellets (LECA)

pH-neutral, reusable; great for DWC net pots & ebb-and-flow.

Rockwool

Propagation cubes. High pH — soak first; wear a mask (dust is a lung hazard).

A common blend is ~70% cocopeat + ~30% perlite (moisture retention + aeration). Vermiculite holds a lot of water but can suffocate roots if used alone.

Nutrients, EC & pH — the core skill

Get this wrong and everything dies. Nutrients are mixed as separate A & B stock solutions (calcium in A; sulphates/phosphates in B) — mixing them concentrated causes precipitation and nutrient lockout.

Figure 2 — Keep pH ~5.5–6.5 and EC in the crop's band. Outside these, nutrients present in solution become chemically locked out.
  • Monitor EC + pH daily — both drift as plants drink and you top up. Use EC/TDS and pH meters; keep TDS below ~1,800–2,000 ppm to avoid leaf burn.
  • Water quality: use RO/soft water — hard Indian tap water throws off EC and adds unwanted salts.
  • Solution temperature ~18–22°C — above ~22°C, dissolved oxygen crashes and root-rot (Pythium) explodes; a chiller is often essential in Indian summers.
  • Dissolved oxygen: run an air pump 24/7 (roughly one air stone per ~10 gallons).

The environment

Most Indian commercial hydroponics runs inside a polyhouse or net-house — for climate control and pest exclusion.

NOT viable

Wheat, rice, maize and other staples — low value and space-hungry. Economically pointless in hydroponics. Don't.

A 1-acre commercial setup runs ₹80 lakh–1.5 crore (polyhouse + channels + climate control + tanks/pumps/monitors). Monthly running cost ~₹1.2–1.6 lakh (electricity ~₹40–50k, labour ~₹60–80k, nutrients ~₹20–30k) plus seedlings and media.

Market access is the make-or-break

Vendors quote ₹2–3 crore/acre/year "under ideal management" — treat as best-case, not typical. One documented practitioner earned almost nothing for 8 years before it worked. Line up your HORECA/retail/export buyers before you build. Growing is the easy part.

Subsidy

NHB / MIDH give ~50% protected-cultivation subsidy on the polyhouse structure (higher/100% in NE & Himalayan states), credit-linked and back-ended, min ~2,500 sq m. State missions add top-ups. Note: subsidy is mainly for the structure — hydroponics-specific support is limited. Verify current figures on nhb.gov.in before applying.

  • Master EC + pH; monitor daily and log readings.
  • Use RO/soft water; buffer cocopeat before use.

  • Keep solution cool (~18–22°C); add a chiller for summers.
  • Run air pumps 24/7 for dissolved oxygen.
  • Block all light from the nutrient solution (kills algae).
  • Grow inside a polyhouse/net-house with insect-proof netting.
  • Diversify — fast greens + high-value crops for cash flow.
  • Apply for NHB/MIDH polyhouse subsidy via official portals.

  • Don't grow staple grains (wheat/rice/maize).
