Integrated Pest Management — spray last, not first

IPM is an eco-friendly system that keeps pest numbers below the level where they cause economic loss — using cultural, mechanical, biological and botanical methods first, and treating chemical pesticide as the LAST resort, sprayed only when pests cross the Economic Threshold Level (ETL). India adopted IPM as the "cardinal principle" of plant protection back in 1985.

The problem IPM exists to fix

India uses roughly 1.3 million tonnes of pesticide a year and is among the world's largest consumers. Indiscriminate spraying has caused resistance, pest resurgence, food residues, dead natural enemies and health hazards — the exact damage IPM reverses. India's first IPM research (cotton, paddy) began in 1974; the national centre (now ICAR-NRIIPM) was set up in 1988.

The IPM pyramid — bottom first, top last

Every method has its place, but in a strict order of preference. Prevention is the wide, cheap foundation; chemical spray is the narrow apex you reach for only when everything below has failed.

Prevention / cultural (foundation)

Resistant varieties, crop rotation, deep summer ploughing, timely sowing, field sanitation, correct spacing, balanced fertiliser, sound water management.

Physical / mechanical

Hand-picking egg masses & larvae, light traps, bird perches, destroying crop residue, rogueing diseased plants.

Biological

Parasitoids (Trichogramma), predators (ladybird, green lacewing), pathogens (NPV, Bt, Trichoderma) and botanicals (neem / NSKE).

Behavioural / trapping

Pheromone traps, sticky traps and trap crops that lure or intercept pests.

Need-based only, after ETL is crossed: right molecule, right dose, safe handling, and observe the pre-harvest interval.

Scouting & the two thresholds

IPM lives or dies on one decision: do I need to act today? You answer it by walking your field weekly (AESA — Agro-Ecosystem Analysis) and comparing what you count against the ETL.

Economic Injury Level — the lowest pest density that actually causes economic damage. The "too-late" line.

When the pest spreads a disease (a vector), ETL = zero — a single insect can be catastrophic.

How to scout (AESA)

Walk the field weekly, inspect 5–10 random spots, look under the leaves, and count pests AND natural enemies. Install 1 pheromone trap per pest per acre, yellow sticky traps (~1–2 per 50–100 m²) for whitefly / aphid / thrips, and light traps for night-flying moths. If you are below ETL and natural enemies are present — do not spray.

Cultural & mechanical control

This is the widest, cheapest layer of the pyramid and where most of your pest problem is quietly solved before it starts. Skip it and every layer above works harder.

Choose a resistant / tolerant variety for your region — the single cheapest control you will ever buy.

Rotate crops

Don't grow cotton after cotton. Rotation breaks the pest's food chain and pupation cycle.

Exposes hidden pupae to the sun and birds — a free knock-down of next season's pests.

Early, uniform sowing lets the crop escape peak pest windows.

Trap crops — a border that takes the hit

Plant border trap crops so pests attack them instead of your main crop. A 3:1 marigold-with-tomato planting cut tomato fruit-borer larvae 81–89%. Pigeon-pea or cowpea strips work similarly. Then hand-pick and destroy the concentrated pests off the trap crop.

  • Sanitation & rogueing: destroy crop residue and pull out diseased plants — you are removing the pest's overwintering home.
  • Hand-picking: pick off egg masses and large larvae early in the morning; the cheapest control on a small plot.
  • Bird perches & light traps: perches invite insect-eating birds; light traps catch night-flying moths before they lay eggs.
  • Balanced fertiliser & water: lush, over-nitrogen crops attract sucking pests — feed and irrigate for balance, not excess.

Biological & botanical control

Nature already has an army against your pests. Biocontrol conserves and augments it — but works only early, as prevention or at first sign. It will not rescue an exploding outbreak.

Trichogramma

Egg parasitoid wasp. ~1 trichocard/acre, weekly releases, up to ~50,000/acre for veg borers. Species: T. chilonis (lepidoptera), T. japonicum (rice stem borer), T. pretiosum (field/veg). Store cards 5–10°C, 10–15 days if delayed.

Predators

Ladybird beetle and green lacewing eat aphids, mealybugs & eggs. Conserve them — don't spray broad-spectrum chemicals that wipe them out.

Pathogens

NPV (bollworm/armyworm), Bt sprays, and Trichoderma (seed + soil treatment) against soil / seed-borne diseases.

NSKE 5%

50 g crushed neem kernel/L, soaked overnight ~12 hr, filtered, + 5 g soap/L. Costs ~₹10–30/L vs ₹80–150/L commercial neem oil.

Make NSKE work

Use seed 3–8 months old (azadirachtin peaks then), spray after 4 PM (UV degrades it), and use it fresh (keeps 3–6 days in the dark). A weak, old batch does little — which is why some farmers wrongly conclude "neem doesn't work."

Traps & pheromones

Traps do two jobs: they monitor (tell you when pests arrive and how many, so you know when the ETL is near) and sometimes mass-trap or disrupt mating. A pheromone lure is pest-specific — that specificity is a feature, not a limitation.

  • Pheromone traps: ~1 per pest per acre for monitoring; species-specific lures such as gossyplure for pink bollworm. A generic "all-pest" lure is a red flag — real lures target one pest.
  • Mating disruption: for pink bollworm, SPLAT / gossyplure dollops @ 200–250 g/ha, 3 times at 45 / 75 / 105 DAS confuse males so they can't find females (see the economics chapter for the yield gain).
  • Yellow sticky traps: ~1–2 per 50–100 m² catch whitefly, aphids and thrips — and warn you early.
  • Light traps: catch night-flying moths before they lay; run them near, not inside, the crop so you draw pests out.

Traps are your early-warning radar

Even where mating disruption tech exists, adoption is the bottleneck: only about 3% of farmers used pheromone traps for pink-bollworm monitoring (2018–23). The technology works; the discipline of using it is what's rare.

Safe & judicious pesticide use

When ETL is crossed and botanicals / biologicals haven't held the pest, chemical spray is legitimate — but only if done right. The apex of the pyramid is the smallest layer for a reason.

Confirm the ETL is crossed by scouting. Try NSKE, NPV or Bt first. Reach for a chemical only if those fail.

Use a CIB&RC-registered molecule

Pick a chemical approved for that exact crop-pest at the label dose. Check the CIB&RC registration number on the label and insist on a bill.

Wear full PPE & time it right

Gloves, mask, goggles, full-cover clothing. Spray in the evening or early morning, never against the wind, and cover the leaf undersides where pests hide.

Observe the pre-harvest interval (PHI)

Wait the label's PHI / waiting period before harvest so residues fall to safe levels. Triple-rinse and puncture empty containers; store chemicals locked away from food and children.

Scams & illegal chemicals — the honest reality

  • Spurious / counterfeit pesticide — fake-labelled product is illegal, often useless or dangerous. Buy only from licensed dealers, insist on a bill, and check the CIB&RC number.
  • Banned pesticides still sold cheap — India bans / restricts 27+ pesticides; never buy an unlabelled or "extra-strong" chemical.
  • Miracle "one-spray-cures-all" tonics & gadgets — unverified pheromone kits and overpriced trap gadgets. A generic "all-pest" lure is fake.
  • Dealer-pushed calendar spraying — being told to spray on a fixed schedule regardless of pest count is the opposite of IPM. It inflates your cost and breeds resistance. Spray on ETL, not the calendar.
  • Fake / uncertified seed — buy certified seed with tags from authorised sources.

Economics & case studies — honest numbers

Two big Indian pest stories show both the payoff of IPM and the cost of abandoning it.

  • Bt (Cry1Ac) resistance was first confirmed in 4 Gujarat districts (Amreli, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot) around 2009, then developed even against two-toxin Bollgard-II — largely because farmers skipped refuge planting.
  • National mating-disruption pilots reported roughly a 90% reduction in losses — yet adoption of pheromone monitoring is the bottleneck, not the technology.

Case 2 — Fall Armyworm in maize

  • First reported in Karnataka, May 2018 (first in Asia), it spread to >90% of India's maize area within 16 months, travelling >2,000 km.
  • A 3-year ICAR IPM-module trial (pheromone traps + microbials + botanicals + ETL-based sprays) cut egg-mass and larval infestation significantly vs farmers' spray-only practice.

The honest limits

IPM is labour- and knowledge-intensive. ETL is genuinely hard to calculate and weekly scouting takes discipline most smallholders lack — that, not the science, is why adoption stays low. Biocontrol is not instant: Trichogramma and NSKE work early or as prevention; if pests are already exploding they won't rescue you. And Bt cotton is not a permanent shield — it was oversold. Buying "pest-proof" seed and abandoning monitoring is a proven path to 80–90% loss.

Do's & Don'ts of IPM

  • Scout your field weekly (AESA) — count pests and natural enemies.
  • Act on the ETL, not on the calendar.
  • Choose resistant / tolerant varieties and rotate crops.
  • Deep-plough in summer to expose pupae.
  • Plant border trap crops (marigold, pigeon pea, cowpea).
  • Hand-pick egg masses / larvae early; install light + sticky + pheromone traps.
  • Release Trichogramma and spray NSKE 5% at first sign of pests.
  • Conserve natural enemies (ladybird, lacewing, spiders, birds) — put up bird perches.
  • Use only CIB&RC-registered pesticides at the exact label dose.
  • Wear full PPE and spray in the evening / early morning.
  • Strictly observe the pre-harvest interval (PHI) before harvest.
  • Plant the refuge around Bt cotton; buy certified seed with tags + bill.

DON'T

  • Don't treat pesticide as first choice — it's the last resort.
  • Don't spray on a fixed schedule regardless of pest numbers.
  • Don't buy unlabelled, banned, or "extra-strong / miracle" chemicals.
  • Don't buy pesticide without a bill and CIB&RC registration number.
  • Don't mix chemical cocktails blindly or overdose "to be sure."
  • Don't spray broad-spectrum chemicals that wipe out natural enemies.
  • Don't harvest before the PHI ends — residues get you rejected.
  • Don't mix or spray near kitchens, water bodies, food grains or children / livestock.
  • Don't skip PPE or spray against the wind.
  • Don't reuse or dump empty containers — triple-rinse & puncture.
  • Don't assume Bt seed makes monitoring unnecessary, or skip the refuge.
  • Don't rely on old / badly stored neem seed for NSKE and expect results.
