Kadaknath — India's black-meat chicken

Kadaknath (locally Kali Masi, "black flesh") is an indigenous bird of the tribal Bhil communities of Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, which won its GI tag on 30 July 2018. A genetic trait (fibromelanosis) turns its feathers, skin, meat, bones and most organs black. It's a genuine premium niche bird — high protein, low fat, medicinal reputation — but read the market chapter before you dream of riches.

The one-line truth

Kadaknath is a slow-growing, low-laying, niche bird with no guaranteed mass market. For most successful farmers the real money is in selling chicks & hatching eggs to other aspiring farmers — which is exactly the mechanism scammers abuse. It's a decent supplementary income for a disciplined smallholder, not overnight wealth.

The honest market — read this twice

There is no assured buyer

Unlike broilers, no mandi will absorb your birds. You must build your own market — health-conscious urban buyers, restaurants, festival/gift demand, direct & online sales. Line this up before you buy chicks.

Housing

Most Kadaknath farms use deep litter plus a fenced free-range run — cheapest for beginners, and foraging improves flavour.

~1–1.5 sq ft per adult in deep litter — a 100-bird flock ≈ 500 sq ft covered + a run.

2–4 inches of sawdust/husk/straw; turn every 2–3 days to keep it dry (stops ammonia & coccidiosis).

Long axis east–west; wire-mesh upper walls. Aim ~20–26°C, 50–70% humidity.

Predators

Wire-mesh roof & walls against dogs, cats, snakes, rats, mongoose and hawks — free-range birds are most exposed.

Give perches (natural roosting instinct) and, for layers, nest boxes in corners by ~20–25 weeks.

Brooding & rearing — where flocks live or die

Mortality is highest in the first 4 weeks. Get the temperature ramp and space right and you've won half the battle.

On arrival: give glucose/electrolyte water first, feed after 1–2 hours; cover litter with paper for 3–4 days so chicks don't eat it.
Heat & space: ~250 W infrared lamp per 100 chicks; 6–8 inches/chick early. A round cardboard ring prevents corner-piling (a top cause of smothering).
Never overcrowd — it's the main driver of coccidiosis and mortality.

Feed

Feed is ~65–75% of total cost — and a Kadaknath eats for months. Free-ranging is your best cost-cutter.

Cut the feed bill

Let birds free-range for seeds, greens and insects, and grow Azolla & Moringa on-farm to boost protein cheaply. But foraging alone gives underweight birds — supplemental balanced feed is still essential. Give layers extra calcium (crushed shell/limestone) for shell quality.

Breeding & hatching

Kadaknath rarely sits on eggs

It's a poor brooder. Hatch with an artificial incubator (21-day cycle) or a broody hen of another native breed as a surrogate. Remove chicks ~48 h after hatch to the brooder.

Improve hatchability

DIY setups reach ~65%; good pens do better. Levers: right male:female ratio, timely egg collection, short clean storage, disinfected incubator, vaccinated/dewormed breeders.

Source the PURE line

Buy from KVK Jhabua, Mhow Veterinary College hatchery, CPDO Bhubaneswar, or the MP govt Kadaknath / ODOP portal. Sourcing pure stock is your whole brand.

Don't sell crossbreds as pure

Legit improved crosses exist (CARI-Shyama, Narmada Nidhi) but they are NOT pure Kadaknath and must never be sold as such — it's illegal under the GI and destroys buyer trust.

Health & vaccination

Kadaknath is relatively disease-resistant — but "needs no vaccine" is a dangerous myth. Ranikhet (Newcastle) can wipe out an unvaccinated flock.

Deworm every 2–3 months; keep litter dry against coccidiosis; rotate coccidiostat to ~12 weeks.
Biosecurity: foot dips, disinfect twice monthly, isolate sick/new birds, clean feeders/drinkers daily, control rats & flies.

Indicative 100-bird meat batch: chicks ₹7,500–12,000 + basic shed ₹10,000–15,000 + feed/medicine ~₹30,000–40,000. With premium sales and tight management, farmers report a net of roughly ₹50,000–90,000 over ~6 months — if they actually sell at premium prices.

The real earner: chicks & hatching eggs

Selling day-old-to-28-day chicks (₹75→₹120) and hatching eggs is higher-margin and faster-turning than meat. Combine meat + eggs + chicks, with your own market, for the honest model. (Note: this is also the mechanism scammers exploit — see next chapter.)

Government support

KVK Jhabua gives subsidised chicks + training (up to ~90% first batch). MP & Chhattisgarh run tribal/women chick-distribution schemes. NLM (DAHD) offers a 50% back-ended subsidy (up to ₹25 lakh) for rural poultry — apply at nlm.udyamimitra.in.

Scams & fake chicks — be paranoid

Fake / impure "Kadaknath"

Crossbreds (Kadaknath × broiler/RIR) or other black birds are sold as pure. Field tells: pure Kadaknath is small (~1–1.5 kg) and slow-growing; a crossbred hits ~3 kg fast and shows a red comb by ~2 months (pure is black/grey). Definitive proof is a DNA/marker test.

"Guaranteed buyback" fraud — the big one

The Maharayat/Rayat Agro case (Sangli, 2017) collected farmer investments promising to buy eggs at ₹20–60 and birds at ₹600–1,200 — the contracts were fictitious. FIRs across multiple districts, arrests, thousands of farmers, hundreds of crores alleged. No legitimate operator guarantees buyback at fantasy prices.

Overpriced chicks far above KVK's ₹75–120.
Inflated egg/meat-price marketing ("₹50/egg guaranteed," "220 eggs/year") to justify high chick/franchise fees.
Pay-in-advance online chick sellers — chicks never delivered.
MLM/franchise pitches promising passive income from "your own Kadaknath empire."
"Needs no vaccine/care" sellers — you lose the flock to Ranikhet or bad brooding.

Do's & Don'ts of Kadaknath farming

DO

Source pure chicks from KVK / govt hatchery / Mhow / CPDO.
Get hands-on KVK training before buying birds.
Follow the full vaccination schedule (Marek's day 1, Ranikhet + boosters, IBD, fowl pox).
Nail brooding — temperature ramp, round ring, no overcrowding.
Keep litter dry; disinfect twice a month; strict biosecurity.
Use an incubator or surrogate hen — it won't brood.
Free-range + Azolla/Moringa to cut the feed bill.
Build your own market first; sell chicks/hatching eggs for margin.
Keep batch records (FCR, mortality, cost/bird).
Apply for NLM/state/KVK subsidies.
Start small (25–50 birds); scale after one clean cycle.

DON'T

Don't believe "get rich quick" or 220-eggs/year claims.
Don't fall for guaranteed-buyback / franchise / MLM schemes.
Don't skip vaccination — resistance ≠ immunity to Ranikhet.
Don't overcrowd the brooder.
Don't buy suspiciously cheap or suspiciously heavy "Kadaknath."
Don't sell crossbreds as pure (illegal under GI).
Don't expect broiler timelines — it's a 6-month bird.
Don't rely on a single buyer or assume mandi demand.
Don't neglect predators, especially free-range.
Don't feed low-protein during grow-out.
Don't pay large advances to unverified online sellers.
