Cattle & buffalo — a daily-milk livelihood

A dairy animal turns green fodder and crop residue into milk you can sell every single day — a steady cash flow no seasonal crop gives you. But dairy is 100% management, not luck: feed is ~65–70% of your running cost and margins live or die on it. "Lakhs from 2 buffaloes" is marketing; a realistic small unit earns ~₹80k–1.3 L/year and many beginners lose money in year 1.

green fodder MILK Fodder + minerals + care → milk sold every day → monthly income

🥛

Daily cash

Milk sells every day — steadier than any seasonal crop; morning + evening income.

🌿

Uses residue

Straw, weeds & crop leftovers become milk; grow green fodder to cut the biggest cost.

💩

Second income

Dung → biogas (fuel) + slurry/vermicompost ("black gold") as a real extra earning stream.

🏦

Scheme-backed

RGM, NLM, NABARD-DEDS and free NADCP vaccination lower your risk and cost.

The honest truth up front

The two things that decide profit: feed (65–70% of running cost — grow your own fodder) and reproduction discipline (a buffalo that goes 500+ days between calves earns milk only part of the year). Believe the field averages, not the seller's "20–25 L/day" and "3,000 kg Gir" — those are elite outliers, not what your animal will average.

Choosing your breed

Match the breed to your climate, feed and vet access — not to a seller's yield story. Indigenous cattle and buffalo suit low-input conditions; crossbreds give more milk but need better management.

kg / lactation ~2,300 Sahiwal desi ~1,840 Red Sindhi desi ~1,775 Gir desi ~2,230 Murrah buffalo ~2,400 Jersey-cross crossbred
Figure 2 — Average yield per lactation (kg; NDDB/ICAR). Note: 1 L milk ≈ 1.03 kg, so litres run ~3% lower.
BreedTypeAvg yield / lactationWhy keep it
SahiwalIndigenous cattle~2,300 kg (1,600–2,750)Best indigenous milker; heat-tolerant. Fat ~4.9%.
Red SindhiIndigenous cattle~1,840 kg (1,100–2,600)Hardy, tick-resistant; up to ~3,400 kg under elite mgmt.
GirIndigenous cattle~1,775 kg (village ~900)Saurashtra genetics have the highest ceiling. Fat ~4.5%.
Murrah buffaloBuffalo1,500–2,500 kg (~2,230)High fat (6.5–9%); field avg ~6–8 kg/day, 10–16 L well-managed.
HF / Jersey crossbredCrossbred cattleJersey-cross ~2,400 kgHigher yield but lower heat/disease tolerance — needs assured feed & vet care.

Beginner pick

Hot/humid + low input → indigenous (Sahiwal, Gir, Red Sindhi) or Murrah buffalo. Cool climate + assured feed/water/vet → HF/Jersey crossbred only. Buy locally, with a vet present, and milk-test over several days.

Housing & comfort

A cool, dry, well-ventilated shed prevents heat stress, mastitis, HS and BQ. Comfort is yield — a heat-stressed animal eats less and milks less.

drain fan / cooling calf pen Open-sided · sloped floor drains to a channel · shade & fans
Figure 3 — An open, shaded, sloped-floor shed with cooling and a separate calf area.
  • Space: ~40 sq ft covered + ~80 sq ft open run per adult animal.
  • Floor: gently sloped for drainage → dry feet, fewer foot & udder problems; keep bedding dry.
  • Cooling: shade, cross-ventilation and fans (or a wallow for buffalo) — heat stress silently cuts intake and milk.
  • Separate the calf and any sick or newly-bought animal; never house animals in dark, damp, stuffy sheds.

Feeding & nutrition

Feed is ~65–70% of running cost. Balancing the ration — and growing your own green fodder — is the single biggest lever on profit.

300–400 g

40–80 L

Roughage 2/3 Conc. 1/3 DM/day ≈ 0.025 × live-weight + 0.1 × kg milk e.g. 400 kg cow ≈ 10 kg DM/day Mineral mixture + salt: 25–50 g each, EVERY day Almost all Indian rations are mineral-deficient
Figure 4 — The ration blueprint: two-thirds roughage, concentrate per litre of milk, minerals daily.
🌿

Green fodder

Maize, berseem, lucerne, hybrid napier — the cheapest energy. Grow your own to slash cost.

🌾

Roughage 60–70%

Straw + green fodder form the bulk; keep roughage two-thirds of the diet.

🥣

Concentrate

Maintenance 1 kg (desi) / 1.5 kg (crossbred/buffalo) + 300–400 g per litre milk.

🧂

Minerals + salt

25–50 g each daily — non-negotiable; deficiency silently cuts yield & fertility.

The margin lever

Add +15% ration for growing animals and +10% in the last trimester of pregnancy. Max intake is ~3–3.5% of body weight — don't overfeed concentrate or starve roughage; that causes acidosis and wastes money.

Breeding & reproduction

The calving interval is the hidden profit-killer. Target ~13–14 months; real Indian buffalo intervals run 400–600 days because of silent heat and anoestrus — the single biggest loss for beginners.

Cattle — AM/PM rule standing heat inseminate ~12 h later morning heat → evening AI Buffalo — different! standing heat inseminate ~24 h later best conception ~24 h after onset

1

Log every heat

Watch for standing heat and record it. Silent heat in buffalo is common — miss it and the calving interval balloons.

2

Use quality AI with correct timing

Govt/NDDB semen. Cattle: AM/PM rule (~12 h). Buffalo: ~24 h after standing heat — don't blindly copy the cattle rule or conception drops.

3

Pregnancy-check by day 30–60

Rectal palpation or ultrasound. Rebreed by ~60–90 days post-calving to hit the 13–14 month interval.

Health & vaccination

Vaccination and deworming on a calendar are the cheapest insurance you can buy. Deworm 2–3 weeks before vaccinating for a better immune response.

  • Enrol under NADCP for free FMD + brucellosis vaccination (6-monthly) and get the 12-digit Pashu Aadhaar ear-tag (INAPH).
  • Never break the cold chain; use sterile disposable syringes and never reuse needles.
  • Rotate dewormers (avoid resistance); deworm 2–3 weeks before vaccinating.

Don't assume total protection

Indian HS vaccines often don't give a full 12 months of cover — outbreaks still happen. Time HS before the monsoon and keep watching, don't treat one shot as a year-long guarantee.

Clean milk & the money side

Mastitis is the top clean-milk and income killer — sub-clinical cases show no visible signs yet cut yield and raise cell count. Test even when milk looks normal.

Clean-milk routine

Wash hands & udder, do full milking, teat-dip after, first-stream / strip-cup or California Mastitis Test to catch mastitis, then chill fast. Practise dry-cow care.

2

Know the real economics

A ~₹5 lakh 10-animal unit or ~₹1 lakh 2-buffalo unit. A 2-buffalo unit scales to ~₹80,000–85,000/year only if yield, milk price and feed cost hold. Feed is 65–70% of running cost — margins live or die on it.

3

Keep records

Milk yield, feed cost, AI dates, vet bills — this is what separates profit from loss and lets you cull poor animals.

"Lakhs from 2 buffaloes" is hype

Realistic small-unit profit is ~₹80k–1.3 L/year and depends brutally on feed cost. Many first-timers lose money in year 1. Crossbreds are not free money — under poor feed, cooling, hygiene and vet care they underperform indigenous cattle and die more. Budget on field averages, not seller stories.

Manure income & government schemes

Dung is a real second income stream — and the government funds much of dairy's cost and risk if you apply through the right channels.

RGM

Rashtriya Gokul Mission — indigenous breed dev, AI, sex-sorted semen (up to 50% subsidy), IVF (₹5,000/pregnancy). Delivered via State agencies.

💉

NADCP

Free mass FMD + brucellosis vaccination, 6-monthly.

Working capital & KCC

The Kisan Credit Card (Animal Husbandry & Dairying) gives concessional working-capital credit for feed, vet & upkeep — apply at your bank. All DAHD schemes hub: dahd.gov.in/schemes-programmes.

Scams to avoid

  • Online cattle-purchase fraud: fake "dairy farm" numbers send cow photos, demand an advance, then vanish. A 2024 Gurugram farmer lost ₹22,000 for 4 cows that never existed. Never pay advance to an unseen seller.
  • Fake "pure Gir/Murrah": crossbreds/non-descripts sold as elite pedigree with fabricated yield stories — verify in person, milk-test over days, take a vet, insist on records.
  • Subsidy/loan middlemen: RGM is delivered only through State Implementing Agencies; DEDS via banks + NABARD. You don't pay an agent — apply through official channels.
  • Miracle feed/supplement promising huge yield jumps — no additive overrides genetics + a balanced ration.

Do's & Don'ts of dairy livestock

DO

  • Start with 2 in-milk / freshly-calved animals so income begins immediately.
  • Match breed to your climate, feed & vet access — indigenous/buffalo for low-input.
  • Balance the ration: 2.5% DM, 2/3 roughage : 1/3 concentrate, concentrate per litre milk.
  • Feed mineral mixture + salt (25–50 g each) every day.
  • Grow your own green fodder to cut the biggest cost.
  • Give clean water free-choice (40–80 L/day/adult).
  • Follow the vaccination + deworming calendar; deworm 2–3 weeks before vaccinating.
  • Enrol in NADCP for free FMD/brucellosis and get the Pashu Aadhaar ear-tag.
  • Detect and record every heat; use correct AI timing (cattle AM/PM; buffalo ~24 h).
  • Pregnancy-check by day 30–60 and rebreed by ~90 days (~13–14 mo interval).
  • Practise clean-milk hygiene: wash udder, full milking, teat-dip, CMT test, chill fast.
  • Keep written records and use manure for biogas/vermicompost income.

DON'T

  • Don't believe "20–25 L/day" or "lakhs from 2 buffaloes" — budget on field averages.
  • Don't pay any advance to an unseen online cattle seller.
  • Don't buy "pure Gir/Murrah" without in-person milk-testing over several days + a vet + records.
  • Don't pay agents/middlemen to "arrange" NABARD/RGM subsidy — apply officially.
  • Don't skip the daily mineral mixture — deficiency silently cuts yield & fertility.
  • Don't overfeed concentrate or starve roughage — it causes acidosis and wastes money.
  • Don't ignore silent heat / long calving intervals — the biggest hidden loss.
  • Don't copy cattle AI timing for buffalo — inseminate buffalo ~24 h after standing heat.
  • Don't break the vaccine cold chain or reuse needles.
  • Don't overlook sub-clinical mastitis — test even when milk looks normal.
  • Don't house animals in dark, damp, poorly-ventilated sheds.
  • Don't buy crossbreds if you can't guarantee feed, cooling, hygiene & vet access.
