Soil health — the cheapest, highest-return fix on your farm

Indian soil is tired and unbalanced, not dead — and most of it is fixable cheaply. Two facts anchor this whole course: about 30% of India's land is degraded, and India loses roughly 5.3 billion tonnes of topsoil a year to wind and water erosion. The single highest-return action for a smallholder is a free Soil Health Card + adding organic matter. Everything else builds on that.

The honest truth

The national NPK use ratio is roughly 7 : 3 : 1 against the agronomic ideal of 4 : 2 : 1. Urea carries an ~80%+ subsidy, so it is artificially cheap — that price signal, not farmer ignorance alone, drives the imbalance. And nothing here is instant: organic carbon rebuilds over years, not one season. Anyone promising overnight fertility is selling something (see the Do's & Don'ts and problem-soil chapters).

What "healthy soil" actually means

Healthy soil is not just chemistry. It works on three dimensions at once — physical, chemical and biological — and organic carbon ties all three together.

Physical

Good structure and water-stable aggregates. FYM at 8 t/ha raised soil organic carbon 25% and improved aggregate stability vs chemicals alone (rainfed Alfisol finger-millet trial).

Chemical

Balanced N-P-K, sulphur, and micronutrients (Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, B); pH near-neutral; low salts.

🐛

Biological

Living: earthworms, bacteria, fungi, mycorrhizae. Low organic carbon correlates with high micronutrient deficiency (ICAR study, 2.5 lakh samples, 620 districts).

Carbon is the keystone

India's soil organic carbon has fallen from about 1% to ~0.3% over ~70 years. Rebuilding it toward 0.5–0.75% is the quiet target behind almost every practice in this course.

Soil testing & the Soil Health Card

The card is real, free, and returns a crop-wise fertiliser dose — but it is only as good as the sample you take. A lab result from a bad sample is worse than useless.

Apply — it's free

Go to the nearest Agriculture office / KVK / Soil Testing Lab, or apply on soilhealth.dac.gov.in (app also available). Carry Aadhaar, land record (khasra/khatouni), mobile, photo. Helpline 1800-180-1551.

Sample correctly

After harvest / before next season, take 8–10 spots in a zig-zag, 0–15 cm deep, mix in a clean bucket, quarter down to ~500 g, air-dry in shade, bag and label. Bad sampling = worthless card.

Read & act on the card

Card returns in ~15–30 days with 12 parameters + a crop-wise fertiliser + amendment dose. Follow the dose, don't fertilise by habit.

Re-test the trend

Re-test every ~2–3 years and track whether organic carbon and pH are moving the right way.

Never pay for a "soil test"

Fake agents charge ₹500–2000 for a test the government does for free. Real SHC testing costs the farmer nothing; KVK micro-nutrient tests are only ₹10–25/sample. If someone quotes hundreds of rupees, walk away.

Reading N-P-K, pH & the key lines

Three numbers decide most yield: the N-P-K balance, pH, and organic carbon. Learn to read these and you've read 80% of the card.

  • pH: <5.5 = acidic; 6.5–7.5 = ideal; >8.0–8.5 = alkaline/sodic. Acid soils sit mostly in the NE, eastern and southern high-rainfall belts — Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat have essentially none.
  • EC (salinity): low EC is fine; high EC means a saline soil with poor germination.
  • Organic Carbon (OC): the master indicator — the higher and more stable, the healthier and more fertile the soil. Rice- and pulse-based systems hold more than wheat/coarse-grain systems.
  • N-P-K: most Indian farms over-apply nitrogen (urea) and under-apply P, K, S and micronutrients. Cut urea toward the 4:2:1 balance and add what the card flags as deficient.

Don't skip the micro lines

Zinc and boron are widely deficient across India and quietly cap yield. If the card flags them, correct them — a few kilos of zinc sulphate can lift yield more than another bag of urea.

Organic matter & soil carbon

Organic matter is the one input that fixes all three dimensions at once — structure, nutrients and biology. But it rebuilds slowly: think seasons to years, never one application.

FYM / compost

Base dose 5–10 t/ha (or vermicompost 2.5 t/ha) every season — the workhorse of carbon-building.

Green manure

Grow and plough in dhaincha or sunhemp before the main crop to inject nitrogen and carbon cheaply.

Pulse rotation

Legumes fix their own nitrogen and lift organic carbon — rotate them in, don't crop cereals endlessly.

Never burn residue

Returning straw builds carbon; burning it destroys carbon and topsoil life in one afternoon.

Enriched compost pays

One tonne of enriched compost substitutes roughly 14–15 kg N, 50–60 kg P₂O₅ and 25–30 kg K₂O. Bio-enrichment adds ~₹2,000/tonne of cost but returns far more in fertiliser saved and soil built.

Integrated Nutrient Management (INM)

Don't rely on urea alone. INM balances three sources — organic matter, biofertilisers and chemical fertiliser at the card's dose — so each covers the others' gaps.

Organic base

FYM/compost 5–10 t/ha (or vermicompost 2.5 t/ha) every season — feeds soil carbon and microbes.

Biofertilisers

Rhizobium (pulses), Azotobacter / Azospirillum (cereals), PSB (phosphate-solubilising bacteria). Cheap; PSB + full chemical dose lifted saline-soil barley yield ~3%. These are living products — expired inoculant does nothing.

Chemical at the card's dose

Apply chemical fertiliser at the recommended dose — cut urea toward 4:2:1, and add the P, K, S, Zn and B your card flags as deficient.

Buy living inputs carefully

Biofertilisers and bio-stimulants are alive. Buy only FCO-registered products with a visible batch number and expiry, store them cool, and use before expiry — a dead inoculant is money thrown away.

Fixing problem soils

Acidic, saline and sodic soils each need a different fix — and each dose must come from a test, never a vendor's sales pitch.

Sodic gypsum doses (ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal)

Roughly 10–15 t gypsum/ha (full Gypsum Requirement is often 12–16 t/ha), but 50% of GR is the economically viable dose for rice-wheat. Get the number from the CSSRI Gypsum Requirement tool, which accounts for soil pH and irrigation-water RSC — not from a vendor.

Don't get over-sold amendments

Gypsum and lime vendors routinely push far more than the soil needs. Over-liming an already-fine soil creates new problems. The dose must come from the Gypsum/Lime Requirement test — refuse any flat number quoted off a truck.

The money side & government schemes

Soil-test-based fertilising isn't charity — it raises yield and cuts cost at the same time. And the testing, plus several supporting schemes, is heavily government-funded.

Enriched compost economics also stack up: 1 tonne substitutes ~14–15 kg N, 50–60 kg P₂O₅ and 25–30 kg K₂O for a bio-enrichment cost of only ~₹2,000/tonne.

Honest reality on the numbers

  • The 9–15% gains are averages from good implementation. Farmers who ignore the card, or whose card came from a distant composite sample, see little.
  • "100% organic overnight" usually drops yield first — transition years often see a 10–30% dip before soil biology recovers. PKVY exists precisely to support that transition. Budget for it.
  • Some 2025–26 sources mention a revised PKVY figure up to ₹50,000/ha; the officially cited figure remains ₹31,500/ha over 3 years — verify the current amount on myScheme before you count on it.

Certification is free under PKVY

Organic certification under PKVY runs through the free PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System). Never pay a middleman for "guaranteed organic certification" — that's a scam.

Do's & Don'ts of soil health

DO

  • Get the free Soil Health Card and act on its crop-specific dose.
  • Sample properly — 8–10 zig-zag spots, 0–15 cm, mix, shade-dry, ~500 g.
  • Add organic matter every season — FYM/compost 5–10 t/ha or vermicompost 2.5 t/ha.
  • Aim for the 4:2:1 NPK balance; cut excess urea.
  • Use biofertilisers (Rhizobium/Azotobacter/Azospirillum/PSB) matched to the crop.
  • Correct the micronutrients the card flags — especially Zn and B.
  • Lime acidic soils per a Lime Requirement test.
  • Gypsum sodic soils per CSSRI Gypsum Requirement (~50% GR is cost-effective).
  • Return crop residue / grow green manure (dhaincha, sunhemp) to build carbon.
  • Rotate with pulses/legumes — they fix nitrogen and lift organic carbon.
  • Re-test every 2–3 years and track the trend.
  • Buy only FCO-registered inputs with a visible batch number and expiry.

DON'T

  • Don't pay anyone for "soil testing" — SHC is free; KVK tests are ₹10–25.
  • Don't overdose urea because it's cheap — it degrades carbon and pollutes groundwater.
  • Don't skip organic matter and rely on chemicals alone.
  • Don't apply fertiliser "by habit" without a soil test.
  • Don't take a lazy single-point soil sample — it makes the whole card wrong.
  • Don't buy miracle "tonics / nano-boosters" with no ICAR/FCO registration.
  • Don't burn crop residue — it destroys organic carbon and topsoil life.
  • Don't over-lime or over-gypsum on a vendor's word — dose from a test.
  • Don't ignore micronutrient / pH lines on the card — they cap yield.
  • Don't expect instant results — carbon and reclamation take seasons to years.
  • Don't go 100% organic overnight without planning for a transition-year dip.
  • Don't pay for "guaranteed organic certification" — PKVY uses free PGS-India.

Scam patterns to remember

Fake paid "soil testing" · miracle tonics / nano-boosters / magic granules with no FCO registration · unregistered/adulterated biofertilisers · "guaranteed organic certification for a fee" · vendors over-selling gypsum/lime beyond the test dose. No product replaces organic matter + balanced NPK. Any one of these → walk away.
